#5 Reason Businesses Fail: Not Marketing to the Right People, the Right Way in Hemet San Jacinto

In a world overflowing with options, trying to be everything to everyone can lead to business failure. You can only please some of the people some of the time. So, why not make sure those are people you can genuinely engage and build true connections and relationships based on trust with?

A common mistake among business owners is attempting to target an audience that is too broad. For example, a marketing company targeting “Black women in the US between the ages of 25 to 64” faces significant challenges due to the sheer size of this demographic—about 21.5 million Black women in the United States as of 2021.

Instead, adopting a more focused approach, like targeting “50+-year-old Gen X empty nest married Black women who love gardening and live in Hemet, CA”, allows for a clearer marketing strategy that resonates more with that specific demographic.

This doesn’t mean others won’t be interested in your goods or services; it simply enables you to create content that reflects who you truly are—the person behind the brand.

Some may connect because of one or more of those factors, while others might find you through word of mouth from fans or because someone they know prefers your solutions. Many will discover you through online searches where you come up for what they need.

This is Part 3 of a 5-Part Series. Read Part 4.

What Is a Unique Value Proposition (UVP)?

Failure Stories: Businesses That Aimed Too Broad

Here are some horror stories of businesses that failed due to a lack of a specific niche:

  • General Retail Stores: A store that tried to sell everything from clothing to electronics without specializing often faced overwhelming competition from larger retailers or online platforms. Without a clear niche, they struggled to attract a loyal customer base, ultimately leading to their closure.
  • Restaurants with Broad Menus: A restaurant offering a wide variety of cuisines—Italian, Chinese, American, and more—may have diluted its brand. Without focusing on a specific cuisine or style, it failed to stand out in a crowded market, leading to customer confusion and ultimately, closure.
  • Fitness Centers: A gym that aimed to appeal to everyone, offering a mix of classes without specializing in a particular fitness trend (like CrossFit, yoga, or HIIT), might struggle to build a dedicated clientele. This lack of focus could lead to underwhelming membership numbers and financial instability, resulting in business failure.
  • Consulting Firms: A consulting firm that attempted to serve all industries without honing in on a specific sector (like tech or healthcare) may have found it challenging to market its services effectively. Clients often seek specialists who understand their unique challenges, and this broad approach likely hindered their ability to retain clients.
  • E-commerce Platforms: An online store that tried to sell a broad range of products without targeting a specific audience (like eco-friendly products or handmade crafts) could struggle with brand identity. In a saturated market, customers may choose competitors with clearer focuses, diminishing the online store’s chances of success.
  • Local Bookstores: A bookstore that offered a wide array of genres but didn’t cater to specific interests (like local authors or rare finds) might have failed to attract a loyal customer base. By not differentiating itself, it risked being overshadowed by larger chains or online options, ultimately leading to its decline.

These scenarios illustrate how a lack of niche focus can lead to challenges in customer engagement and brand identity. In today’s competitive landscape, people spend their money with brands they have something in common with, such as shared interests, beliefs, or values.

Narrowing down your niche helps you create relatable marketing campaigns for your target audience while fostering a sense of community and loyalty among customers. By cultivating a loyal customer base, you not only secure your business’s future but also build a community around shared interests and values.
