Step 3: Apply for an Employer Identification Number(EIN)

This post is part 4 of 11 in the series How to Start a Business in San Jacinto or Hemet

An Employer Identification Number (EIN), also called a Federal Tax Identification Number, is like a Social Security number for your business. The IRS assigns this unique nine-digit number to identify your business for tax purposes.

If you’re starting a corporation, forming an LLC, or hiring employees, you’re legally required to get an EIN. But even if you don’t have employees, having an EIN can make things easier. This is true even if you choose to use a DBA.

It helps keep your personal and business finances separate, which is great for setting up business bank accounts, applying for loans, and handling taxes.

Step 3: Apply for an Employer Identification Number(EIN)

Why You Need an EIN

  1. Tax Purposes: The IRS uses your EIN to track your business’s tax filings.
  2. Hiring Employees: You’ll need an EIN if you plan to hire any employees.
  3. Opening a Business Bank Account: Most banks require an EIN to set up a business account.
  4. Building Business Credit: An EIN helps you establish business credit, separate from personal credit.
  5. Forming an LLC or Corporation: If you’re setting up an LLC or corporation, an EIN keeps your business identity distinct from your personal one.

4 Ways to Apply for an EIN

The IRS offers four ways to apply for an EIN:
